Rainfall Monitoring Program
The Rainfall Monitoring program is administered by the SWCD and includes residents that volunteer their time to record rainfall in the county on a daily basis. The reports are mailed to the SWCD office where they are entered into a reporting system that the Minnesota State Climatology Office uses to monitor the amount of moisture we receive.
In years where we experience flooding events, the State office will call and ask us to contact our monitors to find out the amount of rainfall we have received and the information is used to predict flooding events that the weather service can use to prepare the areas for flood warnings.
The information is very important to our region and the volunteers provide a valuable service to Kittson County. The monitors are provided with rain gauges and the forms needed to record the rain events.
We currently have 25 volunteers monitoring rain in 22 townships. We would like to have a volunteer monitoring rain in every township in Kittson Co. We are currently seeking volunteer monitors from Cannon, Peatland, Klondike, Pelan, McKinley, Norway, and Clow townships. If you live in any of those townships and are interested in becoming a rainfall monitor volunteer please contact the Kittson SWCD office.
