Well Sealing Program
The Kittson SWCD, in carrying out the Comprehensive Local Water Plan (CLWP), has developed a program to locate and seal abandoned wells. Cost share is available through state and county funds at 100% for projects up to $2,000. If there is an abandoned well on your property or you have questions, please contact the Kittson SWCD to find out more about our well sealing cost share program.
What are Abandoned Wells?
Abandoned water wells are wells that are no longer in use or cannot be repaired.
Why are Abandoned Wells a Problem?
There is potentially 1,000 to 1,500 abandoned wells in Kittson County. Improperly sealed wells are potential sources of contamination to ground water and can consequently affect nearby drinking water wells. Abandoned wells act as channels for surface pollutants to enter ground water. Many abandoned wells are not covered or protected, which poses a physical danger to humans, mainly small children, and animals falling into these open holes.
